‘John Wick 5’ with Keanu Reeves Officially Announced – Plus Animated Prequel in the Works

Yeah, we’re thinking he’s back. Lionsgate has officially confirmed John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development, with Keanu Reeves set to return as the unstoppable assassin and franchise helmer Chad Stahelski once again directing. The announcement was made during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon 2025 presentation in Las Vegas, where the studio also revealed an animated instalment in the growing John Wick universe.

While it appeared that Reeves’ character had met his end at the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4, which grossed over $US440 million worldwide, the franchise is far from done. Reeves, who turns 60 this year, is not only returning for a fifth mainline entry but will also lend his voice to a new anime-style prequel that delves into Wick’s infamous “Impossible Task” — the deadly mission that ultimately set the original film’s events in motion.

The animated project will be directed by Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising), with Stahelski, a long-time anime fan, involved in helping bring the stylised world of Wick to life through a different lens.

Chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Adam Fogelson said, “Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world. We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”

Long-time producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee echoed the sentiment: “It’s so important to get this story right and give John’s story the proper next step. It’s exciting to take the first step on that road.”

The franchise has now crossed the $US1 billion mark at the global box office, with each main entry outperforming the last. Alongside the four films, the Wick universe includes the Ana de Armas-led spinoff Ballerina (hitting cinemas in June), the Peacock and Prime Video series The Continental, and, also just announced, an upcoming Donnie Yen-led spinoff centred on his John Wick: Chapter 4 character, Caine. And there’s more: Lionsgate is also developing a series titled John Wick: Under the High Table, as well as a AAA video game and even an immersive experience in Las Vegas.

No release date as yet for John Wick: Chapter 5.
