Johnny Depp & Penélope Cruz Will Be Reuniting in Action-Thriller ‘Day Drinker’

Disney

Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz will once again share the screen in Day Drinker, a suspense action-thriller from Lionsgate.

Day Drinker centres on a cruise ship bartender who encounters a mysterious day drinker, only to find both characters entwined in a dangerous criminal world with unexpected links between them.

The film is to be directed by Marc Webb, whose credits include 500 Days of Summer, the two Andrew Garfield-starring Amazing Spider-Man films, and Gifted. He is currently finalising Disney’s live-action Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, set for release in 2025.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, quoting Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson as saying, “Day Drinker combines a highly commercial concept with wildly outrageous twists and turns all set in an incredible world, and there is no better filmmaker than Marc or two more perfectly cast actors than Johnny and Penélope to bring that world to life.”

The film’s production team includes several prominent figures, with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, known for their work on the John Wick franchise, producing alongside Adam Kolbrenner, whose credits include The Tomorrow War and Free Guy, as well as screenwriter Zach Dean. Dean, who wrote the original screenplay, is known for writing action fare such as Fast X and The Tomorrow War. Lionsgate’s Chelsea Kujawa will oversee production, with Dan Freedman handling the studio’s negotiations.

This project marks Depp’s most prominent Hollywood effort since his well-publicised legal battles with former wife Amber Heard. His recent works, such as Jeanne du Barry and Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, have largely been smaller, European-backed productions.

This film will be Depp and Cruz’s fourth cinematic collaboration, following previous roles together in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.
