Oscar winners Nicolas Cage and Christian Bale are going big in the official trailer for Madden. Prime Video‘s John Madden biopic comes from David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter), and this first full look suggests a sports story leaning heavily into comedy and its larger-than-life personalities. Watch the trailer above and get the details below.
Nicolas Cage Goes Big as John Madden
Cage plays the legendary NFL coach as the film moves from Madden’s successful run with the Oakland Raiders into the chapters that made him an even bigger cultural figure.
More on Screen Realm:
The trailer shows Madden’s relentless approach to coaching catching up with him when he’s diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer and decides to step away. Broadcasting provides his way back into football, complete with some amusing exchanges with Pat Summerall (Joel Murray), before Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins (John Mulaney) arrives with another opportunity.
“This is it. This is the future. Madden football,” Hawkins tells him.
Madden isn’t immediately impressed. After discovering the proposed game has only seven players on each team, Cage’s response is emphatic: “You only have seven men on a team, and I’m out!” Hawkins needs Madden’s football knowledge, however, and the two get to work turning the idea into what would eventually become the hugely successful Madden NFL franchise.
The trailer isn’t approaching all of this with a particularly straight face. There are big wigs, big performances and plenty of jokes, including Madden learning about N.W.A. and asking whether Dr. Dre was actually a doctor. Whatever balance of drama and comedy the finished film ultimately strikes, Russell certainly appears to be having fun with the stranger parts of the story.
Christian Bale Reunites with David O. Russell

Bale co-stars as Raiders owner Al Davis, Madden’s friend and another famously distinctive football figure. “It’s a sin not to use your gift,” Davis tells Madden as he encourages him to find his way back to the game.
Madden marks Bale’s fourth feature with Russell following The Fighter, American Hustle and Amsterdam. Bale won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter, while Cage brings his own Oscar pedigree after winning Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas.
The supporting cast includes Kathryn Hahn as Madden’s wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Davis’ wife Carol, Mulaney as Hawkins and Shane Gillis.
The Trailer Is Already Getting People Talking
Cage’s transformation and performance have wasted little time generating debate, particularly over how closely his take captures the real Madden.
NBC Sports‘ Mike Florio was particularly unimpressed, writing that the trailer arrived “more with a thud than a BOOM!” He was even harsher on Cage’s portrayal, describing it as “a caricature of someone trying to be Madden. And failing.”
Florio did find something to praise, noting that the NFL action shown in the trailer appears authentic and suggesting Bale’s Davis could help make up for his reservations about Cage. The trailer has also prompted plenty of debate, with its exaggerated performances and unusual tone giving audiences plenty to talk about ahead of release.
When Is Madden Released?
Written and directed by David O. Russell, from a screenplay developed from an earlier version by Cambron Clark, Madden opens in select US cinemas on November 11.
The film will then stream globally on Prime Video from November 18, 2026.
