The first trailer has arrived for Napoleon, a Joaquin Phoenix-starring historical epic from filmmaker Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien, The Martian).

Phoenix stars as Napoleon Bonaparte, the Corsican-born French military commander and political leader who led a number of campaigns during the Revolutionary War, became de facto leader of the French Republic as First Consul (following a coup that he orchestrated in 1799), and become Emperor of the French in 1804.

The Apple Studios-produced and Sony Pictures-distributed film is being described as “a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed.”

The cast includes Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine, Tahar Rahim, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, Matthew Needham, Youssef Kerkour, and Phil Cornwell, among others.

The film was written by David Scarpa, who also penned Scott film All the Money in the World and whose credits include The Last Castle and The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008).

Napoleon will be opening in U.S. cinemas on November 22nd and Australian cinemas on November 23rd. The film will be streaming on Apple TV+ at a later date.
