Rejoice, fans of Peaky Blinders – a movie is officially heading to Netflix!
The upcoming film, with Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby, is scheduled to begin production later this year. The picture promises to be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning series, which spanned six seasons and chronicled the rise and fall of the Shelby family amidst radical social, economic, and political upheavals.
Murphy expressed his excitement in a statement provided to Netflix site Tudum, saying, “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”
The film, being made in collaboration with BBC Film, will be directed by Tom Harper, who helmed episodes of the show’s first season in 2013 and whose feature credits include 2019’s The Aeronauts and last year’s Gal Gadot-starring Netflix film Heart of Stone. The screenplay is coming from series creator Steven Knight.
Harper shared his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “When I first directed Peaky Blinders over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. Peaky has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
Tommy Shelby was last seen riding off on a white horse, on a mission to begin a new life. While the plot of the new movie remains tightly under wraps, Knight hinted at what’s to come: “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
