The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies, have once again spotlighted the year’s most critically panned films, with Madame Web leading the pack. The Sony superhero film earned three “wins,” including Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Dakota Johnson, and Worst Screenplay.
Other notable recipients include Joker: Folie à Deux, which took home Worst Sequel and Worst Screen Combo for stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, while Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer were both “honoured” for their work in the Netflix comedy Unfrosted.
Francis Ford Coppola received Worst Director for his long-gestating passion project Megalopolis, which also saw Jon Voight take Worst Supporting Actor. Coppola, however, did not take the Razzie nods as a slight. Instead, he shared a fiery statement on Instagram, defending his film and critiquing the industry’s aversion to risk-taking.
OTHER POSTS:
“I am thrilled to accept the Razzie award in so many important categories for @megalopolisfilm,” Coppola wrote. “And for the distinctive honor of being nominated as the worst director, worst screenplay, and worst picture at a time when so few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking! In this wreck of a world today, where ART is given scores as if it were professional wrestling, I chose to NOT follow the gutless rules laid down by an industry so terrified of risk that despite the enormous pool of young talent at its disposal, may not create pictures that will be relevant and alive 50 years from now.”
The Godfather and Apocalypse Now filmmaker added: “My sincere thanks to all my brilliant colleagues who joined me to make our work of art, MEGALOPOLIS, and let us remind ourselves us that box-office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.”
The one bright spot in this year’s ceremony was Pamela Anderson, who received the Razzie Redeemer Award for her acclaimed role in The Last Showgirl. Anderson had previously been given a Razzie for Worst New Star in 1996, the year that saw her star in two ill-received films: Barb Wire and Naked Souls.
