Saoirse Ronan Talks Passing on Marvel’s ‘Black Widow’: “I Would Prefer to Do Bond”

Saoirse Ronan has seemingly confirmed, or at least heavily hinted, that she was indeed considered for the role of Yelena Belova in Marvel’s Black Widow, a part that ultimately went to her Little Women co-star, Florence Pugh.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ronan looked legitimately caught off guard when host Josh Horowitz asked about the rumour (you can watch the interview below). “How did you hear about that?” she asked, playing coy about the possibility. “I don’t know.” She then proceeded to break into laughter when Horowitz said, “I’ll take that non-answer as an answer.”

When asked about her views on Marvel films, the four-time Oscar-nominated star expressed that she couldn’t envision herself taking on a role in the MCU. “I can’t see myself doing Marvel,” she stated, adding that she would actually prefer a different iconic franchise. “I don’t… no, I would prefer to do Bond.”

Ronan made it clear that she has nothing against Marvel films, describing them as “brilliant,” and said that she is inclined towards blockbuster projects following a career of mostly smaller-scale projects and period dramas. “I want to do more big movies.” Ronan emphasised that in today’s film industry, where independent films can struggle to gain visibility, working on larger films offers something very precious: eyes. “I love making independent film, I really do. [..] To know that a film is going to be seen is such a luxury.”

Pugh’s portrayal of Yelena Belova in Black Widow received widespread praise, and she has since reprised the role in Marvel’s Hawkeye series and is set to appear in the upcoming Thunderbolts, due for release in 2025. As mentioned, Ronan’s decision not to join the Marvel universe doesn’t mean she is opposed to big productions. During the same interview, she also expressed enthusiasm for starring in large-scale films like Barbie and even mentioned wanting to participate in a musical.

And as for Bond, you just know she would kill it as a villain. She shared her excitement for a potential role in the long-running film franchise, while humourously pointing out the cliché of blonde villains in films. “I’m conscious of being blonde,” she laughed, adding, “Whatever Barbara [Broccoli, Bond franchise producer] wants, I’ll do.”

With her focus on diverse and ambitious projects, Ronan continues to thrive in both independent films and larger productions. Her latest film, The Outrun, was released in the UK on September 27, and her next project, Steve McQueen-directed WWII film Blitz, will have a wide release on Apple TV+ on November 22nd following theatrical runs in select countries.
