Adam Sandler becomes buds with an alien spider! While that certainly sounds like it could be the logline for a Happy Maddison production, it’s actually an upcoming sci-fi drama with a very serious-looking Sandler.

The official trailer has arrived for the upcoming Netflix film, which finds Sandler playing Jakub, an astronaut who has spent six months on a solitary mission to the edge of the solar system. Realising that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth, he becomes desperate to fix things with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan).

Oh, and helping him make sense of his decaying marriage?A mysterious creature from the beginning of time. Meet Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano), a giant spider-like creature working with Jakub to figure what went wrong before it is too late.

The film is directed by Johan Renck, whose credits include episodes for series such as Breaking Bad, Chernobyl, The Walking Dead, and Vikings, and music videos for the likes of David Bowie, Madonna and Beyonce. The screenplay, an adaptation of 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař, was written by Colby Day.

Spaceman, also starring Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini, will be released on Netflix on March 1st.
