Sony has released a big new trailer for upcoming animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

We catch up with Miles Morales (again voiced by Shameik Moore), who reunites with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and finds himselff catapulted across the Multiverse. He encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. What should be an exciting journey of discovery takes a fateful turn when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, pitting Miles against the other Spideys as he attempts to redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

As the trailer shows, Miles will certainly have his hands full, facing Spideys such as Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Oscar Isaac), and a portal-crafting supervillain named Spot (voiced by Jason Schwartzman). And one particular moment in the trailer has sparked up much talk among fans: Spider-Man 2099 says, “Don’t event get me started on Doctor Strange and the little nerd back on Earth-199999.” He’s referring to the MCU – in particular, the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home. So, the MCU appears to be Earth-199999? The folks at Polygon looked at this a little further.

The voice cast includes Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Karan Soni, Jason Schwartzman, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Rachel Dratch, Jorma Taccone, and Shea Whigham.

The film is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (producer/storyboard artist on The Legend of Korra), Kemp Powers (co-director of Soul), and Justin K. Thompson (production designer of Into the Spider-Verse). Into the Spider-Verse writers Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie22 Jump Street) return to pen the follow-up, this time joined by writer David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsMortal Kombat).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will open in Australian cinemas on June 1st and U.S. cinemas on June 2nd.
