Behind-the-Scenes ‘Superman’ Video Drops with James Gunn, David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan & More

Warner Bros. and DC Studios have marked Superman Day with a behind-the-scenes featurette offering a new look at James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman film. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie is set to kick off a new era for the DC Universe. The video includes never-before-seen footage from the set, along with cast interviews and glimpses of the production’s scope. Take a look above.

“Being a child, I loved the purity of Superman,” says Gunn. “It was a time when I was starting to understand what movies were.” He’s joined in the video by his DC Studios co-head and producer Peter Safran, who recalls Gunn’s early uncertainty about taking on the iconic character. “James didn’t know that Superman was in his future. He wasn’t sure that that was the one he should be doing. And then he called me one day, and he said, ‘I have a way in… I know what I want to talk about.’”

The featurette also includes commentary from stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Frank Grillo. Corenswet, who plays Clark Kent, is seen joking with Hoult’s Lex Luthor: “I wear my trunks on the outside of my pants. It’s liberating!” Brosnahan gives us a quick peek at her character’s world with, “Welcome to the Daily Planet!” adding, “It’s been so much fun to have the gang together, finally.” Later, she reflects on the scope of the project: “We’re just getting started, and we’re already deep in the DC universe. In James Gunn we trust — and I think we can do it.”

The moral compass of Superman is front and centre in the film’s approach. “This character’s noble, and he’s beautiful,” Gunn says. Brosnahan adds, “[He] is filled with hope. He saves people because it’s the right thing to do. We could use a little bit more of that.”

Superman will follow Clark Kent as he tries to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing — all while trying to do good in a world where kindness feels outdated. The film’s ensemble includes Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and Milly Alcock — the latter still yet to be seen in character as Supergirl.

Behind the scenes, Gunn reunites with many of his longtime collaborators, including cinematographer Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, and costume designer Judianna Makovsky. The score will be composed by John Murphy (The Suicide Squad) and David Fleming (The Last of Us).

Superman is set to fly into Australian cinemas on July 10, followed by its U.S. release on July 11.
