First ‘Superman’ Trailer: James Gunn’s DC Epic Takes Flight

The first trailer for Superman, James Gunn’s take on the classic DC Comics superhero, has finally landed. As the tagline reads: Look up.

The Massive Cast:

The studio’s first major release in its freshly crafted DC universe, overseen by Gunn and producer Peter Safran, brings in David Corenswet (Twisters, Pearl) as Superman/Clark Kent, a hero driven by compassion and a belief in humanity’s inherent goodness. Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) stars as Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu) takes on the role of classic DC villain Lex Luthor.

The ensemble cast features (big breath) Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, a superhero inventor; Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, an archaeologist-turned-hero with element-altering powers; and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a bold and abrasive Green Lantern. Isabela Merced portrays Hawkgirl, a winged warrior, while Skyler Gisondo plays Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen, and Sara Sampaio takes on the role of Eve Teschmacher, Lex Luthor’s assistant. María Gabriela de Faría stars as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, a nanotechnology-enhanced hero, with Wendell Pierce as Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet. And Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, are played by Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell. Plus, there’s strong speculation that the film will feature the appearance of Supergirl, to be played by House of the Dragon Aussie star Milly Alcock.

AMONG. OTHERS.

The Trailer’s Record-Breaking Views:

James Gunn, who both directed and wrote the film, celebrated the trailer’s record-breaking success, declaring it the most viewed trailer in DC and Warner Bros. history. Sharing the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), Gunn wrote: “Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, Superman is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros. This is because of all of you: thank you! We’re incredibly grateful and, most of all, excited to share this movie with you in July. Happy Holidays!”

Gunn on Superman’s Humanity and Influences:

“We do have a battered Superman at the beginning, and I think that is our country,” Gunn said at a presser for the trailer. The filmmaker explained that emotional core of the film was “about kindness. It was a movie about being good.” He added: “I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country despite their ideological beliefs or politics are doing their best to get by and are trying to be good people despite what it might seem like to the other side or what that other side might be, and I think this movie is about that.”

Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, Gunn has said that while Superman takes cues from All-Star Superman and elements of Silver Age comics, it is not simply a retread of past iterations.

“I think that obviously the original Donner movie influenced me, but there’s also a lot of things that this isn’t, like I’m just making a Donner-type movie. It’s very different from that,” IGN quotes Gunn as saying during a roundtable interview with reporters. “Zack [Snyder] did some excellent stuff. So there’s a lot of ways that influenced me. There’s a lot of ways in which the DC animated universe [influenced me], and then there’s a lot of stuff from the comic books – above and beyond anything else, All-Star Superman – that influenced me more than anything. To take that sort of Silver Age feel, that sort of science-fiction approach to it with gadgets, Lex [Luthor] is really a sort of sorcerer in a way.”

Gunn added: “So everything [influenced me], and then it’s just something that’s completely us.”

Superman‘s Release Dates:

While filming wrapped earlier this year, Gunn has confirmed that additional pickup shots were recently completed to enhance the final cut. Fans can look forward to seeing the Last Son of Krypton in a new light when Superman debuts in Australian cinemas on 10 July and the U.S. on 11 July 2025.
