Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Surviving Black Hawk Down, a docuseries that dives into the harrowing real-life events behind the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. The infamous conflict was depicted in 2001 film Black Hawk Down – and filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the story as producer here. Take a look above.
The three-part series takes a more personal approach to the story, featuring interviews with those who lived through the events. US Army Rangers, Delta Force operatives, Somali militiamen, and civilians recount their experiences, with archival footage and reenactments providing further context.
On 3 October 1993, what began as a US operation to capture lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid turned into a chaotic and deadly urban battle. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down, prompting a desperate rescue effort as soldiers on the ground fought to recover their comrades. By the time the dust settled, following a heated estimated 18-hour battle, 18 US soldiers were dead and hundreds of Somalis had been killed (estimates greatly vary, ranging from 133 to 700 dead).
The docuseries is directed by Jack MacInnes (Leaving Afghanistan) and comes from Ridley Scott’s RSA Films. Jamal Osman and Emma Supple are producers, and Dominic Crossley-Holland and Tom Pearson serve as executive producers .
Surviving Black Hawk Down will arrive on Netflix on 10 February.
