‘The Boys in the Boat’ Trailer: George Clooney Directs Joel Edgerton in True Story Olympics Film

The film is based on the 2013 non-fiction novel of the same name from author Daniel James Brown, The Boys in the Boat tells of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team that competed for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympic games. This true story follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression as they’re thrust into the spotlight and take on elite international rivals.

The cast includes Callum Turner as real-life rowing Olympian Joe Rantz, Edgerton as real-life American rower and coach Al Ulbrickson, Jack Mulhern, Sam Strike, Peter Guinness, and Alec Newman.

This potential crowd pleaser marks Clooney’s ninth feature film as director. The screenplay adaptation was written by Mark L. Smith, whose credits include Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, The Revenant, and upcoming release The Marsh King’s Daughter.

The Boys in the Boat will be in U.S. cinemas from Christmas Day and in Australian cinemas from January 4th, 2024.
