‘The Diplomat’ Season 2: Netflix Has Unveiled the Big Official Trailer for the Second Chapter

Netflix has released the trailer for the highly anticipated second season of The Diplomat, and fans are in for more twists and tension. The show, created by Debora Cahn, continues to unravel a web of political drama, with Keri Russell returning as US ambassador to the UK, Kate Wyler. Take a look above.

Reflecting on where Season 1 left off, Cahn reminds fans that “the call is coming from inside the house.” The shocking revelation that the British prime minister orchestrated the attack on a British warship has set the stage for Kate’s next challenge—proving it. “The US and the UK don’t spy on each other,” Cahn told Netflix site Tudum. “So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”

As if the political stakes weren’t high enough, the finale’s explosive ending has left Kate grappling with personal turmoil as well. Her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) and several of her colleagues were caught in a politically motivated attack in London, shattering relationships and leaving lives in peril. “The marriage she thought was over, the relationship she thought was beginning… all of it, in pieces,” Cahn teased.

What’s Coming in Season 2?

Picking up immediately after the Season 1 cliffhanger, The Diplomat will explore the fallout from the explosion and the evolving dynamics between Kate and Hal. Cahn has hinted that “everything we thought we knew about the Wylers changes, as does everything they think they know about each other.”

Adding to the tension, Season 2 introduces a new character: United States vice president Grace Penn, portrayed by Allison Janney. According to Cahn, the VP thinks Kate is after her job, a suspicion that may not be entirely off the mark.

Russell, who earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Kate Wyler, expressed her excitement for the new season, describing it as “a smart screwball show” that she’s thrilled to return to.

Trailer Highlights and Iconic Filming Locations

The trailer offers a glimpse of the high-stakes drama, with Kate trying to untangle the conspiracy behind the events that almost made her a widow. Viewers will also see key scenes shot at London’s historic St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the crew filmed for four days. “The robes our clergy wore were lent to us by the cathedral,” Cahn revealed, adding that they had only been worn three times before, including at Winston Churchill’s and Margaret Thatcher’s funerals.

Fans can watch the trailer now and prepare for what promises to be an explosive continuation of The Diplomat when it premieres this month.

Returning Cast and New Faces

Alongside Russell and Rufus Sewell, familiar faces from Season 1 will return, including David Gyasi as UK foreign secretary Austin Dennison, Ato Essandoh as deputy chief of mission Stuart Hayford, and Ali Ahn as CIA station chief Eidra Park. Joining them is Allison Janney, whose portrayal of vice president Grace Penn is set to add even more intrigue to the complex political landscape.

The Diplomat returns to Netflix on October 31, picking up right where the explosive Season 1 finale left off.
