Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for The Electric State, an upcoming sci-fi picture from Avengers: Endgame and The Gray Man directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt lead the cast. Take a look above.
Based on Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel, the film reimagines the 1990s as a world where artificial intelligence has triggered a catastrophic war, leaving behind a robot-filled wasteland. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown plays Michelle, a determined young woman searching for her missing brother. Pratt plays a roguish smuggler who joins her journey.
The film’s ensemble also includes Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games), Jason Alexander (Seinfeld), and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad). Anthony Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox, and Jenny Slate are among those lending their voices to robot characters.
With a screenplay from Marvel’s Endgame, Infinity War, and Civil War scribes Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely, the Russos’ adaptation expands on the themes of StĂĄlenhag’s original work, weaving a tale about family amid a retro-futuristic landscape. “I’m blown away by the movie,” StĂĄlenhag, who was involved during development, said to Netflix site Tudum. “It was an amazing experience watching things that I have drawn come to life this way. What resonated most with me was the emotional core of the movie, which is the need for family. Even though the movie has changed genre from the book a bit, that main core is still the same and has been expanded on beautifully.”
Said Anthony Russo, “The story felt like a fairy tale to us. We really wanted to play into those very elemental aspects of a fairy tale.” Joe Russo echoed this sentiment, highlighting the film’s mix of grandeur and relatability:“We grew up on a steady diet of science-fiction and fantasy. And so our brains are always [there]. Our creative ethos is always attracted to these big, fantastical ideas that can present really interesting themes but also be highly entertaining at the same time.”
The Electric State will be streaming on Netflix from March 14th.
