Take a look a the trailer that’s arrived for upcoming Shudder release The Last Thing Mary Saw, a period drama-horror set in the 1800s.

The film tells of a young woman, Mary, played by Stefanie Scott (Insidious: Chapter 3), who is interrogated about the events surrounding her grandmother’s demise. We jump back in time to see what could have led to this death. Raised in a repressively religious household, Mary forms a special relationship with the home’s maid, Eleanor, played by Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan). When the family discovers Mary and Eleanor’s relationship, they see it as an abomination and as something to be dealt with severely. The tension is heightened with the arrival of an enigmatic stranger (Rory Culkin, Waco, Castle Rock), as well as the revelation of greater forces at work.

An atmospheric and tense trailer below, boding well for a film that’s been receiving mostly solid early reviews. There’s an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing, with critics commending first-time feature writer-director Edoardo Vitaletti for an effective, well-performed slow-burner.

The Last Thing Mary Saw will be streaming on Shudder from January 20th.
