Apple Studios has unveiled the official trailer for upcoming William Shakespeare adaptation The Tragedy of Macbeth, from writer-director Joel Coen (one of half of the masterful filmmakers that are the Coen Bros).

Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand (also a producer on the film and Joel’s real-life spouse) star as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in this visually striking take on Shakespeare’s well-known story. Macbeth, after leading King Duncan’s army to victory, is approached by three witches who tell him that he will one day be king. Lady Macbeth, determined and ambitious, convinces him to take drastic measures to make that prophecy a reality. Their fateful steps have begun.

The film looks gorgeous and incredibly atmospheric, like something of a fever dream. The reviews have been very promising since its release in select U.S. cinemas – an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with over 175 reviews, for example, with praise directed at the strong cast and Coen’s approach to the material. It’s high on my must-see list, that’s for sure.

The Tragedy of Macbeth, also starring Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, and Brendan Gleeson, will be streaming on Apple TV+ from January 14th.
