Bart Simpson once promised he wouldn’t wait 20 years to make another movie. Close enough. Nearly two decades after The Simpsons Movie sent Springfield to the big screen, Homer and the family are finally heading back to cinemas. Disney unveiled the sequel’s official title, The New Simpsons Movie, at D23 2026, along with very early footage involving a baseball, an increasingly ridiculous chase and half of Springfield apparently having nothing better to do.
The sneak peek debuted during Disney’s Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center, where Disney President and Chief Creative Officer Dana Walden introduced the movie alongside Bart Simpson.
“What you’re going to see is very rough,” Walden told the crowd. “We normally wouldn’t show you something this early, but Bart insisted.” Much of the sequence was presented through storyboards and rough colour animation with temporary music, giving fans an unusually early look at the movie while it’s still being put together.

Homer vs. One Very Troublesome Baseball
The footage finds Homer at a Springfield Isotopes baseball game with some of his co-workers, where he apparently has a little money riding on what happens next. “Make Homer rich!” he yells as a ball heads his way.
Naturally, catching it would be far too simple. The ball gets loose and sends Homer scrambling through the stadium before the chase spills out into Springfield, tearing through the streets, Moe’s Tavern and a bowling alley while an increasingly large crowd joins the pursuit.
At Moe’s, the infamous pickled eggs briefly get mixed up in the chaos. Things get even more ridiculous once the ball reaches the Duff Beer factory, where Homer ends up swimming through a giant tank of beer before being blasted back towards the stadium.
After all that, the ball lands at Bart’s feet. He simply picks it up, leaving Homer and the exhausted mob with only one appropriate response: “D’oh!”
There’s virtually nothing here about the larger story, but the sequence does give us a good idea of the approach: take a simple Simpsons gag, let it spiral wildly out of control and use the big screen to make Springfield bigger, busier and considerably more chaotic. The temporary soundtrack even gets in on the joke, using music from The Natural before dropping in a memorable cue from Speed as the pursuit gets increasingly unhinged.
Yes, That Really Is the Title
D23 also confirmed that the sequel is officially called The New Simpsons Movie. Not The Simpsons Movie 2, not 2 Simpsons 2 Furious. Just The New Simpsons Movie, which somehow feels completely appropriate.
The sequel was first announced by 20th Century Studios in September 2025, when artwork showed Homer reaching for another pink doughnut alongside the tagline, “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” At that stage, the studio kept both the title and story under wraps, and the D23 footage still gives away virtually nothing about what will actually bring the Simpsons back to the big screen.
Springfield Returns to Cinemas 20 Years Later
The original The Simpsons Movie arrived in 2007 and proved there was plenty of appetite for a feature-length trip to Springfield, grossing more than $536 million worldwide. The movie saw Homer accidentally contaminate Springfield’s water supply, prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to seal the entire town beneath a giant glass dome and leaving Homer, naturally, to eventually clean up the disaster he created.
Soon after its release, the season 19 premiere of The Simpsons featured Bart writing, “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie,” on the classroom chalkboard. He very nearly kept his word.
Exactly what brings Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie back to cinemas remains a mystery, but if Homer can turn one loose baseball into a town-wide catastrophe, he appears to be in perfectly good form.
The New Simpsons Movie opens in cinemas on September 3, 2027.
