‘The Surfer’ Trailer: Thriller Has Nicolas Cage in Australia Taking On Surfers

The trailer has arrived for The Surfer, the upcoming psychological thriller starring Nicolas Cage. Directed by Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium, Nocebo), the film follows a man who returns to his childhood beach in Australia, only to find himself at odds with a group of territorial surfers. Take a look above.

Cage plays a father who, after years in the U.S., brings his son to the same shores he once called home. But his attempt at reconnecting with the past takes a brutal turn when the local surfers make it clear he’s unwelcome. Humiliated in front of his son, he refuses to back down, sparking a tense and escalating standoff that tests his sanity and identity. The sun-scorched beach becomes the stage for a psychological battle, with Cage’s character pushing back against those who claim ownership of the waves.

The film boasts an Aussie ensemble that includes Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), Nic Cassim (Mr Inbetween), Miranda Tapsell (The Dry), Alexander Bertrand (Australian Gangster), and Rahel Romahn (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga).

An Australian-Irish co-production, The Surfer was shot entirely on location in Yallingup, Western Australia, and is produced by Robert Connolly’s Arenamedia alongside Lovely Productions, Tea Shop Productions, and Gramercy Park Media, with support from Screenwest.

The Surfer is set for release in U.S. cinemas on May 2 via Roadside Attractions. Australian audiences can catch it in cinemas from May 15 via Madman Entertainment and CinemaPlus, before it streams exclusively on Stan from June 15.
