Disney has dropped the official trailer for Tron: Ares, the long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise—and the first in 15 years. Being a Tron fan certainly requires patience, but it looks like the wait might finally pay off. Directed by Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), this new chapter takes the grid offline and brings the digital world crashing into our own. Take a look above and read on for more.
The trailer opens with a high-speed light cycle chase that slices a police car clean in half, immediately signalling that we’re entering a very different stage in the franchise that kicked off in the 80s. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a highly advanced program sent from the digital world into reality on a mission that marks humanity’s first encounter with artificial intelligence in physical form.
Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson round out the ensemble cast, alongside the return of original star Jeff Bridges. While Bridges’ Kevin Flynn isn’t seen, his voice is heard in the trailer as Ares materialises: “Ready? ‘Cause there’s no going back.”
“It’s really unbelievable to think we made the original in 1982,” Bridges said on stage during the film’s presentation at CinemaCon this year. “It’s amazing — we never thought we would have this legacy that’s continued on all these years.”

Also revealed: the score will come from Nine Inch Nails duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the Oscar-winning composers whose credits include The Social Network, Soul, and this year’s Challengers. The Tron series began in 1982 with the cult classic directed by Steven Lisberger—who returns here as one of the producers. Its 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy, earned praise for its stunning visuals and Daft Punk’s now-iconic soundtrack. With Tron: Ares, Disney looks to blend the legacy and the new once again—this time, with the stakes firmly rooted in the real world. Let’s hope there’s a winner here.
Tron: Ares lands in Australian cinemas on October 9 and U.S. cinemas on October 10.
