A lengthy official teaser trailer has been released for the next chapter in the True Detective anthology series.

Titled True Detective: Night Country, the upcoming series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives in for one dark case as the long winter falls in Ennis, Alaska. When eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, the two detectives will have to put aside their differences and confront the darkness they carry in themselves as they dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.

The cast of the new chapter includes Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes.

Visually, this looks stunning and tonally, moody as hell. That’s the gorgeous landscape of Iceland doubling for Alaska, by the way. Oh, and could there be a connection to True Detective‘s first chapter? As fans have spotted: that’s a spiral at 1:19.

The new season comes from showrunner, writer, director and executive producer Issa López, writer-director of the fantastic 2017 crime horror-drama Tigers Are Not Afraid (it’s on Shudder – watch it). Foster also serves as executive producer in a large EP group that includes True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto, Oscar-winning Moonlight helmer Barry Jenkins, and season 1 stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

Can’t wait. True Detective: Night Country will premiere on Max (Warner Bros. Discovery is changing the service from HBO Max) sometime later this year. Release date pending.
