The 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards saw some surprising wins, with Max series Hacks taking home the top honour for Best Comedy Series, beating out FX’s The Bear, which had been widely expected to repeat its success from last year. Jean Smart, star of Hacks, also added to the show’s victories by winning Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

The Bear still had an impressive night, picking up four major awards. Jeremy Allen White repeated his win for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, while Liza Colón-Zayas and Ebon Moss-Bachrach claimed Best Supporting Actress and Actor, respectively. Director Christopher Storer also earned Best Directing for a Comedy Series. With these wins, The Bear set a new record, securing 11 Emmy Awards in a single season.

In the drama categories, Shogun was the standout, earning Best Drama Series along with acting wins for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, marking Sanada’s historic victory as the first Japanese actor to win in the category. The show also saw Frederick E.O. Toye recognised for his directorial work.

Netflix‘s Baby Reindeer mostly dominated the limited series section, taking home four Emmys, including Best Limited or Anthology Series. Richard Gadd’s performance and writing were both rewarded, with Jessica Gunning winning Best Supporting Actress in the category.

Other notable wins included Jodie Foster, winning Best Actress for her turn in anthology series Fargo; Last Week Tonight With John Oliver for Best Scripted Variety Series; and The Traitors, which unseated RuPaul’s Drag Race as Best Reality Competition Program.
