The 2025 Emmy nominations have landed—and with them, a reshuffled deck of contenders that reflects both the evolving state of television and the industry’s appetite for fresh blood.

Shows like The Pitt, The Studio, and Adolescence have muscled their way into major categories, shaking up long-standing favourites and making space for a new guard of storytelling. Returning after a long hiatus, Apple TV+’s Severance leads the pack with 27 nominations, reclaiming its spot in the race after missing last year’s eligibility window. Close behind, The Penguin, The White Lotus, and The Studio form a trio of buzzy, prestige favourites.

Apple, HBO and Netflix Dominate—But in Different Ways

Apple TV+ and HBO continue their ongoing tug-of-war for Emmy dominance, while Netflix, despite a quieter year, still made a splash with Adolescence earning 13 nominations. That’s a solid showing for a coming-of-age thriller that became a sleeper hit and could now dominate the limited series categories. Meanwhile, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Black Mirror also saw strong support, both landing in double digits. In comedy, The Studio emerged as a force to be reckoned with, thanks in part to Seth Rogen’s triple threat role as actor, writer, and director.

Notable Snubs Include Squid Game, Poker Face, and Taylor Sheridan’s Shows

As always, some omissions were quick to spark discussion. Squid Game was completely shut out, including a widely anticipated nod for breakout character Thanos. Poker Face was also largely ignored, with Natasha Lyonne missing out despite anchoring the show. The White Lotus received its usual ensemble love—but not for Patrick Schwarzenegger, whose performance some had pegged as a standout. Other high-profile snubs included The Handmaid’s Tale, Black Doves, and The Four Seasons, which earned just one acting nomination.

Taylor Sheridan’s entire slate of eligible dramas failed to crack the major categories. Despite high-profile campaign efforts and star power from the likes of Helen Mirren, Harrison Ford, and Billy Bob Thornton, series such as Landman, Mayor of Kingstown, and the final season of Yellowstone received little to no recognition. Landman, seen as Sheridan’s best chance this year, came up empty. A few technical nods went to Tulsa King, Lioness, and 1923, but the major fields remained elusive—continuing what some are calling an ongoing “Emmy curse” for Sheridan’s empire.

A Rule Change and a More Open Emmy Field

Elsewhere, Imogen Faith Reid was overlooked for her complex performance in Good American Family, and Renée Zellweger’s return as Bridget Jones—eligible as a TV movie—was also left out. Pedro Pascal’s nomination for The Last of Us drew some debate, considering his early-season departure and limited screentime. It’s yet another example of how category placement can spark as much conversation as the nominations themselves.

One behind-the-scenes shift may have also played a role this year. The Television Academy introduced a new eligibility rule restricting actors from being submitted in the guest category if they’ve already been nominated in lead or supporting for the same role—a move nicknamed the “Queen Elizabeth rule,” referencing The Crown’s Claire Foy. It’s a subtle adjustment but one aimed at curbing strategic category shifts. Whether these nominations reflect a genuine shift in taste or simply a momentary realignment, the 2025 Emmys feel more open—and unpredictable—than they have in years.
