‘Ballard’ Trailer: Maggie Q Leads New Series in the ‘Bosch’ Universe for Prime Video

Prime Video has released the official trailer for Ballard, bringing a new lead into Michael Connelly’s expanding Bosch universe. Take a look above and learn more below.

A Cold Case Basement With Plenty to Dig Up

Maggie Q stars as Detective Renée Ballard, who leads the LAPD’s newly created and underfunded cold case division. With limited resources and a small volunteer team at her side, Ballard takes on some of the city’s most challenging long-forgotten crimes. As she digs into cases spanning decades—including a string of serial murders and the mystery of a murdered John Doe—Ballard begins to peel back layers of corruption buried deep within the LAPD itself.

The trailer teases Ballard navigating both the personal and professional tolls of her work, as her investigations draw her closer to dangerous conspiracies and life-threatening situations that extend far beyond the department’s original mandate of solving cold cases.

Bosch Appears

While Ballard brings new faces into focus, Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch isn’t completely absent. The trailer offers a quick glimpse of Bosch as he warns, “The way things were might not exist anymore.”

Just how much of a presence Bosch will be here remains to be seen. His words from the Legacy finale — “Maybe somewhere down the line we’ll get to work together again” — now carry added weight as Bosch and Ballard’s paths cross once more.

Connelly Praises Maggie Q’s Take on Ballard

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times in May, author and series executive producer Michael Connelly praised Q’s portrayal, noting, “Maggie’s great. She just has this kind of defiant aspect that plays well when she’s dealing with the sexism of the department. She doesn’t step back.” He also pointed to the key role played by retired LAPD detective Mitzi Roberts — who inspired the Ballard character and served as a consultant throughout production — adding, “Maggie and Mitzi have really bonded.”

The cast includes Courtney Taylor, John Carroll Lynch, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, Ricardo Chavira, Noah Bean, Alain Uy, and Hector Hugo.

Ballard will premiere with all 10 episodes on Prime Video on July 9.
