Christina Ricci is set to reunite with The Addams Family, at least in some way, in Tim Burton’s upcoming Netflix series, Wednesday.

Ricci, who took on the role of Wednesday Addams in the two Barry Sonnenfield-helmed Addams Family films in ’91 and ’93, has been – for weeks now – quietly working in the live-action series set to focus on the character she once played. Ricci won’t be playing Wednesday; the new take on the character is to be played by Jenna Ortega (Scream, You, X).

No details as yet on Ricci’s exact role, although Deadline‘s news-breaking report states that it will be a new character who is similar to the one Thora Birch was playing before she was forced to leave production due to personal reasons in December. Birch was playing a character named Tamara Novak, dorm mother to Wednesday and one of the only “normie” staff members at the Nevermore Academy that Wednesday attends.

Also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Wednesday is described by Netflix as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago “” all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore”.

Burton is attached as executive producer and is directing all episodes of the series. The show comes from Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar, both of whom will be serving as showrunners and executive producers.

Wednesday is expected to finish filming in Romania towards the end of the month. No release date has been announced.
