‘Goonies’ Sequel Finally Moving Forward – Writer Hired and Spielberg Involved

Warner Bros.

After nearly four decades of speculation, Warner Bros. is officially moving ahead with a sequel to The Goonies.

The studio has tapped Old Henry filmmaker Potsy Ponciroli to write the script, marking the most significant step forward for the long-rumoured follow-up. And Steven Spielberg, who conceived the original story, is attached to the project as producer alongside Goonies screenwriter Chris Columbus, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment. Lauren Shuler Donner, who was involved in the original through her late husband Richard Donner’s production company, is on board as an executive producer.

While it’s certainly promising news and, importantly, it is official, it’s worth noting that it’s still early days. As yet, the studio has not named a director. And, of course, all plot details are still being kept under wraps.

This news follows years of on-again, off-again discussions about a sequel. Even some of the original cast members have cast doubt on the project’s viability in recent years. In September 2024 Corey Feldman took to social media to dispel rumours of a sequel, posting, “I CAN OFFICIALLY TELL U 100% NO! [sic]” Meanwhile, Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan has said he would be open to reprising his role as Data, but was uncertain about the likelihood of a second film – particularly following director Richard Donner’s passing in 2021.

The original Goonies, released in 1985, was directed by Donner and became a cornerstone of ’80s pop culture. The film followed a group of kids—Mikey, Mouth, Data, Chunk, and the rest of the gang—on a wild treasure hunt to save their homes from foreclosure. Along the way, they encountered hidden tunnels, deadly booby traps, and the notorious Fratelli crime family, all leading to the discovery of One-Eyed Willy’s long-lost treasure. The much-loved movie helped launch the careers of young stars like Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton.
