First ‘In Your Dreams’ Trailer: Netflix Animated Film Takes Siblings Into the Wild World of Dreams

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for In Your Dreams, an animated comedy-adventure that takes viewers on a wild, visually surreal journey into the landscape of dreams. Take a look above and learn more below.

The story follows siblings Stevie (voiced by Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Elliot (voiced by Elias Janssen), who discover a mysterious book titled The Legend of the Sandman. Their discovery pulls them into a bizarre dream realm where the mythical Sandman (voiced by Omid Djalili) promises to grant them their ultimate wish: the perfect family.

Along the way, the siblings encounter zombie breakfast foods, a naked dream sequence, and Elliot’s long-lost stuffed giraffe, Baloney Tony — voiced by Craig Robinson. The film also features the voices of Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser.

This potential animated Oscar contender is directed by former Pixar staffer Alexander Woo, whose credits include storyboard and animation work on films such as WALL-E and Incredibles 2. Woo co-wrote the screenplay with Erik Benson, who has a Story By credit on Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur and served as a Story Supervisor on Toy Story 4.

“Dreams have always fascinated me, and a dream movie, in the animated space, has been a white whale,” Woo said during a sneak peek event, as quoted by Forbes. “Every animation studio in the world has had a dream movie in development at some point over the last couple of decades, but none of them have ever been made because I don’t think anyone could figure out how to give a dream movie stakes. When we cracked it, we were like, ‘Oh my gosh, we’ve got to make this.’”

The project is deeply personal for Woo, who drew on his own family experiences for inspiration. “I have a little brother, and Elliot is based on him. I’m very much like Stevie. My brother and I had our epic battles throughout our childhood,” he shared. “One of my good friends, who knows me a little too well, saw the movie and said, ‘You know, this film is just a circuitous way of you telling your brother that you love him?’ and I was like, ‘I guess so?’ Making movies is easier than dealing with your feelings.”

Woo also praised Craig Robinson’s contribution to the film, saying, “He’s a genius, so I was so thrilled when he agreed to be in the movie. His performance as Tony is just fantastic. He just brought so much energy to that character. We improved so many of his lines, and he brought a lot of comedy that we couldn’t come up with ourselves.”

In Your Dreams premieres on Netflix on November 14.
