‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in DC’s Musical Sequel

The first trailer has been unveiled for highly anticipated sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the DC Comics villain and Lady Gaga joining him as Harley Quinn.

“What the world needs now, is love, sweet love.” The classic track plays out in the highly enticing teaser trailer above, packed with a surprising amount of footage for a first look. The trailer finds Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck finding what could be love – or something like it? – when he encounters Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn in the facility they’re being held in. “Let’s get outta here.” It’s a gorgeous first trailer.

The film, which is being billed as a drama with musical elements, will feature a number of covers of popular songs. According to a Variety report in March:

“[…] the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version.”

Joker director Todd Phillips returns at the helm and again writes the screenplay with Scott Silver. The cast also includes Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey. Zazie Beetz reprises her role as Sophie Dumond, the neighbour who catches Arthur’s eye in the first film.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in Australian cinemas on October 3rd and US cinemas on October 4th.
