Margaret Qualley finds the person she thinks she’ll spend her life with, loses the future she had mapped out, and promptly disappears in the first trailer for Prime Video romantic drama Love of Your Life. Gabriel Basso and Aaron Pierre are among the key players in a story that stretches across years, relationships and countries as one woman attempts to rebuild. One Life, Some Very Different Chapters
Qualley plays Maya, a nurse in her twenties whose chance meeting with Charlie, played by Basso, quickly becomes something much bigger. The trailer moves fast through their relationship, from the rush of first love to marriage and plans for a future that suddenly disappears.

Then Maya disappears too. “I put everything I needed in two suitcases, and I threw my phone away,” she says in the trailer. “And then I just didn’t go back.”
By the time we find her in Portugal, Maya has put considerable distance between herself and the people who knew her before.
That’s where Felix enters the picture. Played by Pierre, he’s a British father who becomes part of the new chapter Maya is building. Patrick Schwarzenegger also stars as Jason, her longtime college friend, while Catherine Keener plays Charlie’s mother, Ruth.
Ruth tells Maya: “You don’t know if you made the right choices. That’s why you really have to stay in love with your own life, while it’s happening.”
As Qualley told ELLE: “The story was sweeping and romantic, but not in a typical way. The romance was ultimately with Maya and her own life.”
Rachel Morrison Goes Back Behind the Camera
Rachel Morrison (The Fire Inside) directs, returning for her second feature after years spent building one of Hollywood’s most notable cinematography careers.
Morrison said in promotional materials: “The idea that on the other side of profound grief can lie profound appreciation and gratitude is very real and very personal for me.”
She became the first woman ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography with Mudbound, while her credits behind the camera also include Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther and Fruitvale Station.
That experience came directly into play on Love of Your Life. Morrison occasionally operated the camera herself during some of Maya’s more intimate scenes, while cinematographer Todd Banhazl (Hustlers, Winning Time) handled the film’s broader visual approach.
The production shot across Boston, New Orleans and Portugal in around 40 days, with Lisbon and the Algarve among the locations used. Rather than forcing each setting into a predetermined look, Morrison and her team allowed the places themselves to shape the film as Maya moves through them.
Three Men, Three Very Different Relationships
Morrison didn’t want Charlie, Felix and Jason to feel like interchangeable romantic options.
Pierre was the first of the trio cast, after Morrison saw him in Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge and was struck by his screen presence. Basso brought a very different energy, while Morrison initially wondered whether audiences would be able to leave Schwarzenegger’s considerably less wholesome The White Lotus character behind.
Qualley told ELLE: “Gabe is one of the most present people I’ve ever met. Aaron has this grace to him. He’s so elegant.”
Schwarzenegger, she said, brought an immediate familiarity that suited Jason, Maya’s longtime college friend. Morrison similarly found a humanity and gentleness in the actor that made him right for the part.
Keener also left an impression on Qualley during production. The two-time Oscar nominee (Being John Malkovich, Capote) plays Ruth, whose connection with Maya remains important even after Charlie is no longer at the centre of her life.
Pierre is now leading DC series Lanterns, Basso leads Netflix thriller series The Night Agent, and Schwarzenegger arrives after his widely noticed role in the third season of The White Lotus.
Amazon Paid Big for the Script
Love of Your Life was drawing serious interest well before Morrison and Qualley came aboard. Screenwriter Julia Cox (Nyad) penned the script, which sparked a bidding war in 2024, with Amazon MGM Studios ultimately landing the spec for around $2 million, as reported by The Playlist.
Ryan Gosling (The Fall Guy) and Jessie Henderson (A Simple Favor) came aboard as producers.
The rest of Morrison’s creative team includes editor Jennifer Vecchiarello (C’mon C’mon, My Old Ass), production designer Laura Ellis Cricks (The End We Start From, Black Doves), costume designer Jill Taylor (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, My Week with Marilyn) and composer Dustin O’Halloran (Lion, Ammonite).
When Is Love of Your Life Released?
Before its wider release, Love of Your Life will have its world premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Special Presentations programme on September 13.
Amazon MGM Studios will release the film in select U.S. cinemas on October 7, with Love of Your Life then streaming globally on Prime Video from October 14.
