Bad news for fans of Ransom Canyon: the gates are closing for good. Netflix has cancelled the romantic Western drama after two seasons, ending the story of Josh Duhamel‘s Staten Kirkland, Minka Kelly‘s Quinn O’Grady and the rest of the Texas ensemble.

The decision comes less than two months after season 2 arrived on July 23. Created by April Blair and based on Jodi Thomas’ novels, the series blended ranching dynasties, family feuds and plenty of romantic turmoil, with Staten and Quinn’s long-running relationship forming the emotional centre of the show.

Deadline broke the cancellation news, confirming that Netflix will not be ordering a third season. That’s an especially frustrating turn for viewers because Blair and her team weren’t merely hoping for another chapter: work on season 3 had already begun.

Season 2 Took a Noticeable Hit

The audience numbers point to one likely factor. Season 1 spent four weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 and amassed 23.3 million views across that run. Season 2 opened with 4.1 million views, compared with 7.2 million for the first season over a similar opening period, a drop of roughly 43 per cent.

There was some improvement in week two, when the second season climbed to 5.5 million views and reached No. 2 on Netflix’s English-language TV chart. Even so, it finished its first three weeks in the Global Top 10 with 12.3 million views, leaving it well behind the pace set by season 1.

The Writers Were Already Working on Season 3

This wasn’t a case of the creative team quietly wrapping things up and waiting to see what happened next. Speaking to TVLine after the second season landed, Blair revealed that the writers had already started mapping out the next chapter.

“In Season 3 we’re going to hit other pockets of building out this world. We’re currently in the writer’s room for Season 3,” Blair said.

And there was no shortage of material left to explore. Season 2 finally pushed Staten and Quinn past years of emotional roadblocks, with Quinn accepting a key to the Double K Ranch and the pair choosing to start “forever, now.” At least the show’s central romance gets something close to a proper ending rather than being abandoned on a brutal cliffhanger.

Plenty of other threads were still hanging, though. Lauren (Lizzy Greene) raced after Kit (Casey W. Johnson) before he could leave for Wyoming, Ellie (Marianly Tejada) pushed Yancy (Jack Schumacher) away after giving birth to their daughter, and Sidney (Heidi Grace Engerman) remained very much in play after her increasingly dangerous manoeuvres.

The season also brought Steve Howey into the fold as Staten’s half-brother Levi, opening another side of the Kirkland family that looked primed for further drama.

Blair had spoken about expanding the world with new characters, deeper family history and bigger events in another season. Instead, Ransom Canyon ends its run after two seasons and 18 episodes.
