The official trailer is here for Poor Things, a fantasy-drama that reunites Emma Stone with The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer).

Based on the 1992 novel of the same name by the late Alasdair Gray, Poor Things tells the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone). After being brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), Bella finds herself eager to learn and hungry for worldliness. She runs off with slick and debauched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) and embarks on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

This looks bizarre, funny, visually sumptuous, and I’d expect nothing less from Lanthimos. The adapted screenplay was penned by Tony McNamara, who earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing Lanthimos’s fantastic The Favourite. The film was produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Lanthimos, and Stone.

Poor Things, also starring Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, Margaret Qualley, and Kathryn Hunter, will open in the U.S. on September 8th and in Australia on October 12th.
