Robert Eggers to Direct ‘Labyrinth’ Sequel

Robert Eggers is on a roll. Just days after the announcement of Werwulf—a planned werewolf horror project with Focus Features—the filmmaker has bagged yet another big gig. He’s set to write and direct a sequel to Jim Henson’s much-loved fantasy film, Labyrinth.

Eggers will once again be teaming up with Sjón, who he worked with on writing The Northman and will also be working with on Werwulf. The sequel will be produced by Chris and Eleanor Columbus (the pair also produced Eggers’ Nosferatu) alongside Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company. Brian Henson is on board as executive producer. Details about the plot are being kept firmly under wraps, but we do know that it’s a continuation of the original story – not a remake. The news was first broken by The Insneider and later confirmed by Deadline.

Labyrinth didn’t exactly light up the box office when it was released in 1986, pulling in just $US34 million against a $US25 million budget. But, over time, its unique mix of fantasy, music, and jaw-dropping puppetry from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop has cemented its legacy. The film follows a teenage Sarah (played by Jennifer Connelly) as she journeys through a fantastical maze to rescue her baby brother from Jareth, the Goblin King—played to perfection by David Bowie.

There’s been talk of a Labyrinth follow-up for years, with directors like Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) and Fede Álvarez (Alien: Romulus) previously circling the project. Eggers’ knack for creating immersive, atmospheric worlds, could make him a perfect fit for this whimsical yet eerie universe. It would also be the filmmaker’s first foray into more “family-friendly” fare.

Eggers has had a hit with Nosferatu. The remake has thus far raked in over $US166 million globally from a reported budget of $US50 million. It also recently scored four Oscar nominations, including for Cinematography and Costume Design.
