Check out the first official trailer for DC sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which was first released at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con before being released online.
The follow-up to the 2019 film has Zachary Levi reprising his role as the titular superhero – the “adult” alter ego of teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel, also returning in his role). As we saw in the latter stages of the first film, Batson’s foster siblings were also given superhero alter egos – and they’re back here too. The film brings in Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren as the daughters of Atlas, who appear to the main threat this time around. “Children stole the power of all the gods,” says Mirren’s Hespera. “This is very personal.”
The large cast includes Jack Dylan Grazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, D.J. Cotrona, Grace Caroline Currey, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, Cooper Andrews and Djimon Hounsou.
David F. Sandberg stayed on at the helm after delivering the film, working from a screenplay by returning scribe Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan (a key writer behind the Fast & Furious franchise, which, naturally, gets a big nod in the trailer).
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is set to open in the U.S. on December 21st this year and in Australia on January 5th, 2023.
