‘Until Dawn’ Movie: First Look Video Takes the Horror Game to the Big Screen

A first-look video has arrived for upcoming horror film Until Dawn, based on the 2015 PlayStation Studios video game of the same name. Take a look above.

The film presents an original story set in the same universe as the game, aiming to expand the mythology while – hopefully – delivering the genre-blending tension and scares that made the game a hit.

The plot follows Clover, played by Ella Rubin, as she and her friends venture into the remote valley where her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared a year earlier. Their search leads them to an abandoned visitor centre, where a masked killer begins picking them off one by one. But there’s a twist: after being brutally killed, they wake up to find themselves at the start of the same night, trapped in a deadly time loop. With each reset, the group faces an increasingly horrifying killer, realising that their only escape lies in surviving the nightmare until dawn.

The adaptation comes from director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Shazam!, Annabelle: Creation), with a screenplay written by Blair Butler (The Invitation) and Gary Dauberman (It).

Sandberg shared insight into the adaptation in the first-look video:

“The movie has sort of the same tone and the same vibe [as the game], but it expands upon the universe. One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways. The movie has this mechanic where things start over, and then they get to try again. Every time they come back to life, it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it until dawn.”

The film’s cast also includes Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare. Until Dawn fans may recognise Stormare, who played Dr. Alan J. Hill in the game, although he takes on a new role in this adaptation.

Until Dawn will release in Australian cinemas on 24 April and the United States on 25 April. Stay tuned for the trailer – up soon!
