Following the enticing teaser released in September, Universal has now dropped the official trailer for upcoming horror film Wolf Man, directed and co-written by Aussie filmmaker Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man, Upgrade). Take a look above.
This new take on the classic werewolf story centres on Blake, portrayed by Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night), a husband and father from San Francisco who inherits his childhood home in rural Oregon after his father mysteriously disappears. With his marriage to Charlotte, played by Emmy winner Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna), on the rocks, Blake persuades her to take a break from their busy city life and retreat to the secluded property with their young daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth; Hullraisers). However, what starts as a family getaway quickly turns into a nightmare when an unseen creature attacks them upon arrival. Trapped inside the house, the family fights for survival, but as the night wears on, Blake begins to change in disturbing ways…
The trailer teases a tension-filled mix of suspense, psychological horror, and creature terror, with Blake’s transformation becoming a focal point of the growing threat. There’s even a glimpse into an immersive, point-of-view moment, as we see and hear what it’s like for our lycanthrope-in-the-making.
Ryan Gosling, who was once set to star in the lead role, remains attached to the film as a producer. Gosling co-produces alongside Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum, marking another collaboration between Whannell and Blumhouse following their previous successes with The Invisible Man and Upgrade. Executive producers include Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner, and Ken Kao.
Whannell’s take on The Invisible Man was fantastic; here’s hoping he delivers the goods again and gives us another gripping addition to the modern monster canon. We’ll find out when Wolf Man is released in Australian cinemas on January 16th and US cinemas on January 17th, 2025.
