Brie Larson is stepping into the world of creature horror. The Room Oscar-winner and Captain Marvel star has signed on to lead Fail-Safe, a new feature that teams her with producer J.J. Abrams and Strange Darling director JT Mollner.

Written by No One Will Save You filmmaker Brian Duffield, Fail-Safe is based on a short story by author Philip Fracassi. The story is a disturbing domestic horror tale told through the eyes of a young boy, who begins to uncover a chilling secret about his mother’s true nature. If you want to read the story in full, we got you – RIGHT HERE. The adaptation is described as a modern take on the creature horror genre — one that blends emotional intimacy with escalating terror.

J.J. Abrams, who’s producing through his Bad Robot banner, had high praise for the project: “With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.”

Producer Drew Simon, President of Production at Infrared (the FilmNation label backing the film), added: “I’m beyond excited to see Brie take on this role – it’s frightening, emotionally charged, and so different from anything she’s done before. The depth and intensity this character demands is immense, and I know Brie’s going to bring something unforgettable to the screen.”

Larson, who also serves as an executive producer, is coming off a busy few years with projects including The Marvels, Fast X, and Lessons in Chemistry, the latter earning her Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, and Golden Globe nominations. Fail-Safe marks a notable shift into more grounded horror territory for the actor.

The film is being produced by Abrams, Drew Simon, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller, with Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen and Duffield executive-producing alongside Larson. Infrared is financing, while FilmNation handles international sales. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are co-repping domestic rights. The high-profile project is being introduced at the Cannes market.
