If this ends up happening… WOW. A surprising report is making waves in Hollywood, pointing to a potential high-profile collaboration between David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Quentin Tarantino—though its April 1 origin has some observers scratching their heads.
As first reported by The Playlist, Fincher is set to direct a new film written by Tarantino, with Pitt returning as Cliff Booth, his Oscar-winning role from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. While the publication first ran the story on April Fools’ Day—which naturally raised eyebrows about its legitimacy—multiple reputable outlets have since corroborated that there is, in fact, a project in the works involving these key players.
Industry outlets Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that Tarantino’s shelved project The Movie Critic has evolved into a new script focused on the continuing adventures of Booth. Rather than directing the film himself, Tarantino is said to have given the green light to Pitt to approach Fincher—whom Pitt has worked with on Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Fincher, who currently has an exclusive deal with Netflix, has allegedly agreed to helm the film, with production potentially set to begin as early as this summer.

Though it’s technically being described as a “derivative” rather than a direct sequel, the project clearly shares DNA with Tarantino’s 2019 film. It’s also said to be separate from The Movie Critic in its final form, despite the project’s origins.
At present, no official title has been revealed, and casting details remain unconfirmed. Leonardo DiCaprio’s return as Rick Dalton appears unlikely, though outlets have hinted that discussions may be ongoing. Margot Robbie has reportedly made her availability known should the production seek to include her.
The film would mark an unusual move for Tarantino, who is known for directing his own scripts. However, this may serve as a workaround that allows him to explore characters from his previous work without compromising his plan to conclude his directorial career with a tenth original feature.
Netflix has yet to comment publicly on the project. Whether it’s a streaming-exclusive spin-off or a deeper dive into Booth’s shadowy past, the possibility of Fincher directing a Tarantino script with Pitt front and centre is a mighty enticing proposition.
Stay tuned!
