‘Smoke’ Trailer: Taron Egerton Reunites with ‘Black Bird’ Creator for Fiery Apple TV+ Crime Series

Apple TV+ has dropped the official trailer for Smoke, a gritty new crime series that reunites Taron Egerton with writer-creator Dennis Lehane — who previously teamed up for Apple true-crime mini-series Black Bird. (And if you haven’t seen Black Bird, consider this your nudge!) Watch the trailer for Smoke above and learn more below.

This time, the Emmy-nominated Kingsman and Rocketman actor trades prison bars for burnt-out buildings, playing Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator reluctantly drawn into a twisted chase across a scorched cityscape.

Based loosely on true events and drawing inspiration from the Firebug podcast hosted by Kary Antholis, Smoke follows Gudsen as he teams up with detective Michelle Calderone (played by Bird of Prey and Lovecraft Country star Jurnee Smollett) to track a pair of arsonists whose fires come with more than just smoke—secrets, suspicion, and a trail of psychological wreckage. And as the trailer hints at, it appears that a suspicious light is placed on Gudsen himself.

Smollett and Egerton lead a loaded ensemble that includes Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Anna Chlumsky, Adina Porter, Greg Kinnear, and John Leguizamo.

And yes, that voice you’re hearing in the main theme is indeed Thom Yorke—who composed and performed the show’s main title track, “Dialing In,” now available on music platforms such as Apple Music.

Dennis Lehane (whose resume as a novelist includes highly lauded works such as Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island) writes and executive produces the series. Star Egerton is also among the executive producers.

Smoke premieres globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 27, with the first two episodes dropping at once, followed by weekly episodes every Friday through August 15.
