DC Studios has released a big new trailer for Superman, James Gunn’s much-anticipated reboot that officially kicks off the new DC Universe. The trailer arrives alongside the launch of ticket pre-sales, offering the most substantial glimpse yet at what’s to come. Take a look above and learn more below.
We get more of Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, whose hatred for Superman is at fever pitch. “I’ll destroy you,” he tells the Kryptonian hero, played by David Corenswet (Twisters). “And, of course, that reporter you always do interviews with. Who raised you as a child? I’ll kill them too.” Later in the trailer, he includes the public devoted to Superman: “They chose him — let them die!”
The footage showcases more of the large-scale action: Metropolis under siege as the city is—literally—torn apart; Superman caught in some kind of inter-dimensional space; flashes of the Justice Gang (“Make a move, Big Blue,” Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern angrily says to Superman); Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) piloting Mr. Terrific’s T-Craft vehicle; Superman and Krypto teaming up in a fight; and more.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn explained that his focus was always on who Superman is at his core, saying, “I wanted to tell the story about someone who was truly good in a world that doesn’t value goodness, in a world that makes fun of basic kindness and basic human values. The fact that he can fly and lift buildings and shoot laser beams out of his eyes was really secondary to who he was as a person and what he stood for.”
Gunn isn’t taking the usual slow-build approach for the DC Universe, instead dropping audiences into a world already populated with heroes, villains, and strange phenomena. “It’s a long time coming, to be able to be a part of a world in which superheroes are real,” Gunn said. “We don’t have to explain everyone away. There’s a little bit of magic in this world. There’s science beyond our understanding in this world. This is the kind of place where there’s an island full of dinosaurs that probably exists.”
The film’s cast includes Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Barry, Gotham), Isabela Merced (Alien Romulus), Skyler Gisondo (Licorice Pizza, Booksmart), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys), Wendell Pierce (Selma, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box), and Neva Howell (Greedy People).
Superman opens in Australian cinemas on July 10 and in U.S. theatres on July 11.
