A24 has dropped the first trailer for Warfare, a gritty and tense-looking war picture co-written and directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and filmmaker Alex Garland (Civil War, 28 Days Later). Take a look above.
Warfare unfolds in real time and throws us in with a SEAL team monitoring U.S. troop movements through insurgent territory. As the trailer shows, everything hits the fan. This boots-on-the-ground perspective is shaped by Mendoza’s own wartime experiences; “based on the memory of the people who lived it,” reads part of the film’s synopsis. Mendoza worked alongside Garland as a military advisor on Civil War, A24’s dystopian drama released earlier this year (our review of that one is HERE).
The film brings together a sizeable cast, including D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth), Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), Taylor John Smith (Sharp Objects), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Adain Bradley (The CW’s Riverdale), Noah Centineo (The Recruit), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), and Charles Melton (May December).
This is one of two big projects that Garland has on the horizon. He also has the highly anticipated horror threequel 28 Years Later, which he produced and co-wrote alongside director Danny Boyle.
Warfare will be opening in cinemas sometime in 2025.
